It all sounds so rosy doesn’t it?

Are advertised claims such as 'nutritionally complete' true?

Rosy, feel good advertisements can give consumers a false sense of knowledge and security, if there is no legal requirement for advertisers to be truthful. And there doesn’t seem to be, anywhere in the world... Or the wording can be very slightly altered to make it legal, but misleading.

Pet food companies spend millions annually on advertisements to manipulate you into buying their pet food which has the cheapest, lowest quality, most poisonous ingredients possible, to maximise their profits.

So let’s look at some of the worst problems with most commercial pet food.

What meats are typically used in pet food?

Processed pet food often comes from animals who are dead, dying or diseased, some of it cancerous, along with other rejects for human consumption, giving the overall balance of very low grade food.

Generally, only about 30% of commercial pet food is meat, usually by-products which can be anything from ‘waste’ meat from human meat processing plants, fat, diseased carcasses, to intestines (plus contents - poo to you and me), hair, hooves, etc. Different proteins have varying digestibility. Cheap forms of protein has almost zero nutritional value for your dog.

OK, so you may be a bit disgusted, but you’re probably not horrified are you?

Yet.

The multibillion dollar pet food manufacturers are manipulating you into believing their food is quality, by smiling vets and dog breeders on their packets. Don’t get sucked in.

Author and research investigator, Ann N. Martin discovers many commercial pet food contains euthanased animals, mostly cats and dogs, but also zoo animals, horses and animals from control measures. There may even be roadkill in it, too. Nicely baked for days in hot summer sun.

Do you know what is used to euthanase animals?

It’s sodium pentobarbital. This chemical is not broken down by the cooking process in manufacture. It is still active in your dog's food!

Your dog may be ingesting the chemical used to kill!

Some pet food rendering plants don’t bother to ‘clean’ the euthanased animals and it’s not uncommon to have collars, flea collars (with their high levels of pesticide) and ID tags thrown in the mix.

To me, that’s pretty shocking. I’m guessing you’re having trouble with that too. But there’s more...

Do you remember the outbreak of mad cow disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), in the UK back in the 1990’s? Do you remember what the cause was? It was because ruminant protein was part of the feed given to other ruminants. In other words, dead sheep were processed into cow feed.

Hold on a minute. Cows are vegetarians.

Aren’t they?

So why would they feed them meat?

Your guess is as good as mine, but I suspect increased profit is at the bottom of it somewhere.

Which goes to show, you can’t trust animal feed manufacturers.

Sure, some are better than others, but how can you tell? And what happens when they change hands? Ethics may not be so important to the new owner.

Then there was the realisation that meat from BSE infected cows could cross the species line and, by eating it, humans could get a similar disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

And, of course, dogs can get it too!

The brain and spine are the parts most affected in BSE infected cows. Both the brain and the spine, along with all the other meats humans tend not to eat, are used in pet food manufacture.

There’s talk that this may become illegal in the USA. That’s great news, don’t get me wrong.

But can the law be effectively implemented? Policing laws cost money. Let’s be realistic - that’s more likely to go to other, human causes.

And what about other countries? In most countries, there are no laws governing the quality of commercial pet foods. This means anything can, and usually, does go.

Pet food manufacturers often out source their ‘meat’ supplies from other countries, where these laws don’t exist.

I’m sure you can recall the pet ‘meat’ imported into America from China in 2007, which contained melamine? Melamine is used to bulk out food. It's a non-nutritional filler. And it caused thousands of deaths in pets. And it's still being used today.

If you act now, chances are you can reverse the
downward trend of your dog's health.

How is pet food kept for such long periods?
Commercial pet food companies use preservatives to increase the pet food’s shelf life. Of course, this in turn maximises their profits.

They know these preservatives kill millions of pets every year but without them, their profits would not be as large.

Are you murdering your dog, slowly, by default?

Many of the preservatives are known to cause deadly diseases in humans, so they are forbidden in human food. Diseases such as:-

severe allergies
blindness
immune system collapse
behavioural disorders such as aggression
chronic diarrhoea
cancers of all the major organs - kidney, liver, stomach, spleen, bladder, skin
leukaemia

Wouldn’t you be aggressive, given the same diet?

Many manufacturers proudly proclaim that they are
“Chemical and Preservative Free”.

Veterinarian and author Henry Pasternak, tells it like it is: "Many pet foods advertised as "preservative-free" do, in fact, contain preservatives.”

Common sense tells us that dried food MUST contain preservatives, as it keeps indefinitely at room temperature. No meat or meat by-product can do that without preservatives.

So that claim has to be a blatant lie.

Many preservatives make their way into pet food at rendering plants before the meat is even taken to the manufacturer. So, technically, as the manufacturer hasn’t added it, they can make that claim.

An analysis of several pet foods labeled "chemical free" or "all natural ingredients" found synthetic antioxidants in all samples.

One of the worst preservatives used is ethoxyquin. Ethoxyquin is the most powerful of all preservatives and may be the most toxic. This preservative is not permitted in human food. But it is permitted in pet food.

Lets look at ethoxyquin’s history. When factory workers were exposed to it, they exhibited side effects similar to those of agent orange:

organ failure
organ cancers
leukaemia
blindness
constant diarrhoea

Another preservative used in pet foods, that is not permitted in human food, is formaldehyde or formalin.

Veterinarian Thomas A Newland comments “When the moist foods came out, we figured they must have a very strong preservative because they needed no refrigeration. Many of them do have a very strong preservative - formalin. Formalin is such a good preservative, in fact, undertakers use quite a lot of it.”

Other permitted preservatives in pet food are:

sodium nitrite, which gives a nice rosy colour to food and can produce powerful carcinogenic substances known as nitrosamines
propyl gallate - is now suspected of causing liver damage
propylene glycol used to maintain the right texture and moisture content is used as coolant antifreeze in engines
up to 1000 times more salt than occurs naturally

I recently came across a dried dog food that proudly claimed to come from certified organic poultry. You know, that should be pretty awesome. But since it's dried, it will have preservatives in - perhaps ethoxyquin.

So what's the point?

Marketing is the point!

It will convince many.

Veterinarian Wendell O Belfield has this to say on the typical ingredients of commercial pet food: “Do you know what is in most meal, the major constituent of dry pet food? Urine, faecal matter, hair, pus, meat from animals afflicted with cancer, TB, etc.”

All commercial dog food is cooked, usually for long periods and at high temperatures. Cooked food is not natural, alters the nutritional value and kills vitamins and enzymes.
So what little nutrients there were, are cooked out.

To put the lost nutrients back into the food, synthesised vitamins and minerals are added. Synthetic nutrients are usually isolated nutrients, which aren’t in a natural balance found in whole foods. This means they can’t be properly digested and utilised by your dog.

Then there are the problems some manufacturers keep having, with salmonella (and possibly other) poisoning rife in the plant.

Earlier I mentioned that only 30% of a typical commercial pet food is ‘meat’, or derived from animals. What about the other 70%? Well, apart from a high fat content, the rest is bulked out with carbohydrates of some form such as:

grain deemed unfit for human consumption (spoiled)
waste carbohydrates such as sugar
waste fast food
filler such as melamine

Much of these foods are unnatural for your dog and are not easily digested or utilised. The high sugar content may well be the cause of diabetes now so common in dogs.

And finally, lets not forget the colours and the appetite stimulants. They probably appear almost harmless if you have managed to read this far.

But they add an extra chemical burden to your poor dog's health.

Holistic veterinarians agree as a body, the terrible damage inflicted on your dog's health by commercial pet food. Dogs are dying young from the ingredients in most commercial pet food.

Veterinarian S Allen Price says “Almost all - if not indeed all - cases of hypertension can be traced, I believe, to the commercial foods. I virtually never have to use digitalis or digitoxin anymore.”

Veterinarian Richard J Kearns “We can get most of our animals with heart problems off drugs, when people go along with me in using natural foods and natural supplements.”

Veterinarian Michael W Lemmon “I’ve had cases of heart disease that were absolutely given up on by other veterinarians, because the cardiograms indicated there was no hope. Nutritional therapy improved the animals health greatly and has given them years more of life.”

Veterinarians John E Craigie, H H Robertson, Richard J Kearns “Dead mothers and dead babies; we seldom see them anymore if the mother is fed a natural diet with supplements.”

Veterinarians Robert S Goldstein, Marty Goldstein, Richard J Kearns, H H Robertson “We just seldom see the so-called inevitable diseases in our patients, when we can get the owners to raise their pets on the natural foods.”

Veterinarian Nino Aloro “Diet seems to be at the base of about 90% of the cases of cystitis that I see. When my clients observe the proper diet after initial treatment, there are rarely any of the ‘normal’ relapses. If they put the pet back on commercial food, then the cystitis comes back.”

Veterinarians Richard J Kearns, Norman C Ralston “Bladder stones and kidney stones are completely a nutritional problem. We have never seen a recurrence once the animal is put on a natural diet. Never.”

So I think we may safely conclude that most commercial pet food is nutritionally inadequate and laden with slow release (or sometimes quick) poisons, whatever their advertising claims are.

So what can you do about the diet of your dog
to ensure good health?

First lets consider that dogs originated in the wild. They evolved over millions of years on a diet of raw meat.

So the first thing to do is to stop feeding your dog commercial pet food and start feeding him a diet based on his natural evolution.

Dr Edward Bach (1920s) and Dr Pottenger (1930s) both found huge improvements in the health in people and cats on a raw food diet.

Dr Bach discovered that the bowels of those people who ate mainly raw food, had only a small amount of bacteria as the food was processed easily, with little food held up in various pockets. The smell of the resulting faeces was inoffensive.

Those people on a mainly cooked diet had a larger (more unhealthy) concentration of bacteria, the food was not processed through the bowels as quickly and the resulting smell of the faeces was more foul. They had more gas and a greater tendency to digestive disorders.

Dr Pottenger headed a research project, showing the offspring of cats fed only cooked food, even though the diet was ‘perfectly balanced’, would be born with immune deficiencies and that within three generations, if little or no raw food was fed, the immune system deteriorated to virtual uselessness.

It took another four generations to build the immune system back up to an optimum level of efficiency where the cat was capable of fighting off severe chronic disease.

Just as you need nutritious foods for good health, so does your dog.

You can’t improve on Mother Nature! Dogs evolved on this diet. All you have to do is to interpret this diet and work out how to implement it easily.

Author, veterinarian and animal homeopath Richard Pitcairn says - “Foods are so complex, we still don’t understand them. For example, researchers discovered that cats need taurine, an amino acids only found in animal tissue, which is lost through cooking. Now it is added to cat foods and supplements.
